Frequently Asked Questions
-
It is recommended that your child is at least in pre-K (four years or older) before considering lessons. Readiness varies from child to child, so it’s important to schedule a free trial lesson before committing to an entire term.
-
I teach beginning through mid-advanced students (that roughly translates to preschool through the end of high school).
-
A studio recital is held at the end of the Fall and Spring terms. Adjudicated performance opportunities include: Sonata and Sonatina Festival, hosted by the Athens Music Teachers Association each fall; eFestival, an online festival hosted by the Athens Music Teachers Association each spring; and the Athens-Oconee Federated Festival each spring. Performance in festivals is not mandatory. Students should play in at least one recital for performance experience before participating in festivals.

I am currently fully booked for travel teaching.
-
Yes! I do try to schedule adults students before 2:00 p.m. to accommodate for my school-aged students. I also offer flexible lesson packages for adults whose schedule doesn’t allow for weekly lessons at the same day and time.
-
I accept cash, check, and credit/debit card via Stripe. Checks can be made out to Ashley Wilson. Tuition is paid in ongoing monthly installments. Tuition is a flat rate, so students can join the studio at any point in the semester and still pay the same predictable amount each month.
-
Flat-rate tuition reflects the total cost of all lessons in a year (including summer lessons) divided into 12 monthly installments. The cost of some materials, fees for events, etc. is factored into the flat rate. This way, the only payment you are responsible for is tuition, and it’s always a consistent amount.

A well-maintained acoustic piano or full-size keyboard (88 keys) with a sustain pedal are required to take lessons. An adjustable piano bench is strongly recommended. If you don’t yet have an instrument at home, I would be happy to help you find one.
-
I do not teach group lessons at this time--each child in the family will have a one-on-one lesson with me. However, I can accommodate siblings by scheduling their lessons on the same day in a large time block.
-
I ask that parents of 4-6 year-olds observe lessons to aid at-home practicing. I don't require parents or guardians of older students to observe lessons, but I do require an adult (parent, guardian, babysitter, etc.) to be home--and physically inside the house--during in-home lessons.
-
There is no magic number when it comes to practicing. It is much more important to know how to practice, which I teach all of my students. Thirty minutes a day at least six days a week is a realistic starting point. Younger learners benefit from shorter practice sessions (10-15 minutes) every day or even multiple times a day (three 10-minute practice sessions, for example).

I understand that illnesses, family emergencies, and other unavoidable situations happen. Should you need to cancel a lesson for illness or emergency, I will try my best to schedule a make-up lesson during an available slot in my schedule or on a designated make-up day at the end of the term, but students are only guaranteed one make-up lesson per term. Complete information about make-up lessons can be found in the Studio Policy.
-
I do not offer refunds for lessons canceled on the student's behalf. However, if I need to cancel a lesson and cannot schedule a make-up lesson, your next payment will be credited for one lesson.
-
Unfortunately, no. By quitting piano lessons, you forfeit your slot in the schedule. If you sign up for lessons again at a later date, I cannot guarantee the same lesson day and time you booked before quitting.
